You Can Only Do Your Best

How many times have you heard "It's o.k. you did your best." What happens when your best isn't good enough? No matter how hard you try you can't win the game, you can't make the grade, you continue to fail. Perhaps it is not you who are failing. Maybe the expectations of others is unrealistic and unfair.

  1. As a teacher we were told to set the bar higher and our students would rise to the occasion and hit the bar no matter what the height. This is true to some degree but you have to always factor in the abilities of all the players.

We need to teach our children to be comfortable in their own skin. Help them recognize what their abilites are and yes, also to recognize what their shortcomings are. I don't mean to have them listed on their bedroom walls, but if you have two left feet and can't dance, you might want to think twice about trying out for Dancing with the Stars. If you little guy could care less about playing T-ball, find what he is interested in and stir him in that direction.

Other people's expectations many times come from their own shortcomings. They want us to excel because they couldn't. Their expectations are just that, THEIRS! You can always chose to not accept them.
